With my credit score, do I have a chance of being able to rent a new apartment?

Although it is nothing urgent, I would like to rent a new apartment somewhere in the five boroughs of NYC. With my credit score of 479, do I stand a shot?

I understand your situation (all too well, unfortunately). It depends on the landlord or management company. You MAY have a better shot at a private landlord, because you can try and reason with them (or, sometimes avoid a credit check altogether). With a management company, some have specific credit score requirements and cannot negotiate. In my past experience, I%26#039;ve found that you will be faced with two options. Either put down a large deposit (depending on the place, you can sometimes put down 1 full month or up to 3 months) OR you can get a co-signer and not worry about extra deposits at all. In this case, your co-signer will be held responsible if you fail to pay your rent.

Best of luck...... it takes a while to rebuild credit once it%26#039;s been damaged. Hard lesson I learned :)

not likely, depends on the neighborhood though.

Not if they pull a credit report.

It doesn%26#039;t look good. You would have to have a co-signer. Your best bet would be to look in the newspaper for privately own homes and duplex%26#039;s for rent. A lot of times they don%26#039;t even do credit checks.

I live in a beautiful 3 bedroom home. I started out renting and my landlord did not do a credit check. So the opportunities are out there but you just have to find them.

you%26#039;ll probably need a co-signer AND put down an extra month%26#039;s rent.
